Phytochemistry, Pharmacological Property & Medicinal Uses of Piper Betle (L): A Review

Abstract

Aim of the study: This review focuses on the chemical, pharmacological activities and medicinal uses of Piper betle(L). It is based on the information extracted from the literature to highlight its multiple uses in traditional medicines and phytoconstituents present in Piper betle(L) which having potentials as a lead molecule in pharmaceutical research.

Methods: A literature search in known databases was conducted (till December 2020) for published scientific article using the suitable keywords.

Result: Finding suggest that, to date, a number of important phyto constituents such as Hydroxychavicol,  l,4-allylbenzene -1,2 diol, 1-n-decanoyl hydroxybenzoic acid, 3-butylphenol, bis-chavicol dodecanoyl ester, bis-hydroxychavicol dodecanoyl ester, allyl-3 methoxy-4-hydroxybenzene  have been isolated from leaf of  Piper betel L. Extracts from different solvent of  Piper betel exhibit diverse biological activity, such as anti-microbial, anti-leishmanial, anti-malarial, anti-parasitic, anticancer, gastroprotective, antidiabetic, analgesic, antidepressants, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer and immunomodulatory activity.

Conclusion: Taken together Piper betel (L) may be a potentials source of plant based therapeutic lead compounds, which justify its multiple uses in traditional medicines.
