Comprehensive Approach To The Treatment Of Congenital Anomalies Of The Optic Nerve

Abstract

Background. The work covers study and analysis of the possibility of
improving visual functions and cosmetic rehabilitation in patients with optic nerve
hypoplasia (ONH) due to the pleopto-orthoptic and surgical treatment. The activation of
visual functions in children with ONH is due to the treatment of amblyopia, natural
maturation of the visual system and the effect of neurotrophic therapy, which stabilizes
pathological changes in the central nervous system caused by hypoxic-ischemic lesions
and disorders of hemo- and cerebrospinal fluid circulation.
Findings. Results obtained by us demonstrate that even in children aged 7 to 8 years,
there is possibility to increase significantly visual acuity using only occlusion or
penalization. As a result of our surgical treatment of non-accommodating strabismus in
18 children with congenital anomalies of the optic nerve (CAON), the cosmetic result
was obtained in 100% of cases, and the functional effect (formation of binocular vision) -
in 22.2%. The results obtained showed a high efficiency of surgical treatment of
strabismus in children with CAON and the need to expand the indications for its
appliance even in children with neurological symptoms.
