Mirror-Image Parasitic Element For UWB Antenna Bandwidth Enhancement
Abstract
Ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is the most promisingtransceiver to serve the
wide bandwidth applications. In this work, a unique parasitic element configuration is
used to alter the antenna radiator’s current excitation and hence its resonance performance
to achieve the desired UWB frequency band. The parasitic element is a conductive
element that acts as good parasite to improve the S-parameter response of the antenna. The
UWB frequency range of the proposed antenna is between 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz at -10dB
return loss. The antenna configuration is alollipop-shaped microstrip patch radiator and
designed on FR-4 substrate of dimension 53 × 30 × 1.5 mm3 with dielectric constant of
4.4. It is complemented with ground plane of dimension 53 × 11 mm2
. In the unique
approach by this work, a parasitic element is introduced as an identical shape and mirror to
the radiator with optimised distance. With the inclusion of the unique parasitic element
configuration, the proposed antenna is able to obtained UWB range at -10 dB return
loss.The proposed antenna features small size, low cost and stable response in terms of
impedance matching and radiation pattern, thus can be a good candidate for a high demand
UWB application.
