Efficient Geographic Routing among Obstacles using Virtual Circle

Abstract

A Wireless Sensor Network is a distributed self-configuring network where the sensor nodes are composed of low energy, small size storage capacity with less computational power.  The minimization of energy consumption during transmission of a node is an important issue on the design of connectivity of a network.  In this proposed work, a novel, energy-efficient geographic routing technique is proposed to detect the presence of any obstacle in the routing path of Wireless sensor network.  During data transmission, the virtual coordinate of the obstacle is identified along with the nodes surrounding the obstacle are marked.  These marked nodes form a circle around the obstacle and this circle is named as virtual circle (VC).  The motive of the proposed work VCOAT is to combine the route optimization technique (ROT)and virtual circle (VC) formation around obstacles in the clustered WSN. The VCOAT identifies the shortest path between the source and destination and to prevent the failure of forwarding the data in the obstacle region.  The simulation result shows the increased throughput and residual energy with decrease in packet loss compared with existing protocols.
