Abstract

This paper presents the experimental study of the operational parameters to investigate the effects of the gear manufacturing process, speed of rotation, and gear meshing time on gear noise. The experimental investigation is planned using Taguchi’s technique. Three different gear manufacturing processes are used for gear preparation. A self-designed noise testing setup is used to investigate the gear noise levels for the different gear manufacturing processes at various levels of speed and time. Micro hardness levels of all gears were also measured after the experimental runs using micro Vickers hardness tester. Results show that Wedm processed gear has minimum hardness as compared to other gears. Experimental results were analyzed using ANOVA. The speed of rotation comes out to be the most significant parameter among all operational parameters. For maximum speed of rotation and minimum meshing time gear noise is higher.
