Healing Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract from Morinda Citrifolia (Peruvian Noni) in Periodontal Incisions

Abstract

Periodontal treatments involve gingival mucosal cuts and bleeding; so, this study aimed to investigate the potential effect of hydroalcoholic extract in the regenerative processes of periodontal incisions at 70 percent at different concentrations (1%, 5%, and 10%) of Morinda citrifolia (Peruvian Noni) and their coadjuvant accelerating effects in the healing of oral tissues. Before the experimental test, previous studies were conducted as the pharmacognostic study, percentage of moisture, solubility testing, qualitative phytochemical study to continue with the pharmacological study, and the experimental test properly. Doses were administered to the sample in groups of five Holtzman strain male albino rats in different concentrations for the experimental groups and the control group physiological serum at 0.9% in quantities of 0.5 ml twice a day in the incision, which was evaluated for seven days observing specific parameters such as infection, skin tone gingiva, closure of the wound, reduction in the size of the incision, and a percentage of healing which was evaluated in the histopathological analysis. The results showed that the healing activity improved by reducing the size of the incision in the gums on the seventh day in all groups that were administered the 70% hydroalcoholic extract at its various concentrations, resulting in better concentrations of 5% compared to other concentrations (1% and 10%). This is the first study that demonstrates Peruvian Morinda Citrifolia due to its accelerating response in improving the healing process in periodontal therapies
