Taxonomy of DDoS Attacks and Performance of DDoS Attack Detection Approaches

Abstract

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS)attacks are the predominant security threat faced by the Internet user, that causes bandwidth depletion and exhausting the target’s resource. The development of new processing technologies has helped the attackers to produce large scale powerful DDoS attacks. There different attack detection methods which are developed using various techniques. In spite of the availability different attack detection methods the existing literature reports shows that attack increases and it leads to economic losses. This paper presents the taxonomy of DDoS attack and different DDoS defence strategies proposed by researchers.  Finally the paper presents the performance metrics of various methods used in the detection of DDoS attack.
