Revitalizing the areas surrounding the historical sites . Erbil city as an applied study

Abstract

The context surrounding the historical sites is an essential component of the conservation policy for these sites. In achieving urban development of the city, the changes made and the interventions made to the environment surrounding historical sites have a direct impact on the quality of the World Heritage site itself. The revitalization of areas surrounding the historic site that may not in itself be of OUV value aims to protect those sites from the negative influences of their contexts. Accordingly, the area surrounding the Erbil Citadel and the specific regulations for this region were studied, and it was one of the necessary conditions for adding Erbil Citadel to the World Heritage List in July 2014. The adaptive reuse policy was defined and adopted as a key strategic principle in revitalizing the Erbil Citadel and its surroundings. The current research aims to focus on the periphery of the Erbil Citadel. Identifying and activating a specific method for accessing this area within the framework of the general theory of buffer zones surrounding World Heritage sites.
