Abstract

Alternator output voltage needs to be maintained at rated value for the better performance of the load equipment efficient performance. Automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is the power system voltage regulating device used to regulate the alternator voltage at its rated value. AVR regulates the terminal voltage and improves the voltage stability, this paper explores the application of AVR. MATLAB simulation is developed to regulate the alternator voltage using AVR as described in this paper. Proportional Integral (PI) controller has the best performance for the feedback control action in many engineering applications and adopted in this work. Variable structure model of control is used for the implementation of this AVR. This design shows better performance in a steady state and dynamic state of operation. For performance demonstration step response is considered and the simulation results are presented to find the voltage stability optimal improvement in steady state and dynamic state.
