Effect of Operating Parameters and Antioxidant Additives with Mahua Biodiesel to Improve the Performance and Reducing the Emissions in a Compression Ignition Engine
Abstract
The work explores the examination of optimized MSME20 biodiesel blend with ignition improvers like diethyl ether (DEE) and decanol (DEC). These are mixedwiththe best blend MSME20 in different proportions 5% and 10% by volume basis.The diethyl ether (DEE) is a renewable oxygenated fuel, which has favourable characteristics to be utilized as a fuel additive for the diesel engines. Where decanol (DEC) also having favourable characteristics to be utilized as a fuel additive. In this current experimental investigation the effect of ignition improvers DEE and DEC with the blend MSME20 of diesel engine on the performance and emission characteristics. All the tests are conducted using a single-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine without modification at a rated engine speed of 1500 rpm and variable load conditions. It is found that using DEE as a fuel additive improved the engine performance and significantly reduce the emissions. The engine maximum brake thermal efficiency is 34.73%is obtained for the blend MSME20-D70-DEE10 and the lowest brake specific fuel consumption is0.23 kg/kW-h is obtained for the blend MSME20-D70-DEE10and while compared with the diesel fuel both are having nearly the same values. Finally it is observed that the blend with ignition improver DEE i.e. MSME20-D70-DEE10 has shown high BTE, Mechanical efficiency, and lower BSFC when compared with the other blends. Further, the exhaust emissions are smoke opacity, CO, NOX are decreased and released higher CO2, HC emissions. Hence the blendMSME20+D70+DEE10 could be suggested for renewable fuel source for diesel engine applications.
