Application of the Smart Grid Concept in a Renewable Energy System
Abstract
The combination of Smart grid, Renewable energy systems and Energy storage systems is becoming more and more popular as a viable generation alternative to the conventional grid. Innovation in technologies is developing to make better implementation of these environment friendly grids for improving energy management scenario including better transmission congestion management. In the world of electrical engineering, a new revolution has emerged with the concept of smart grid renewable energy. Usage of this concept reduces the load on the traditional grid, increases power saving, increases efficiency, and optimization. An isolated load is considered in the present paper which is fed using a pad mounted transformer via the conventional grid. The aim is to feed the load through renewable energy with the least usage of the conventional grid. The optimum utilization of renewable energy resource is shown to be done in paper. The unidirectional DC power of solar grid is processed through a DC to DC converter. A battery is connected to a bidirectional DC to DC converter. The output of this bidirectional converter is coupled with that of DC to DC converter of solar PV system. This point of common coupling is then made the input of a DC to AC single phase inverter. The AC inverter output is then fed to the isolated load. The controlled output of the inverter deriving its energy from the renewable source/battery is managed by the controllers which decide the switching patterns of the converters
